The winners of the Irish Whiskey Masters were announced this week. The judging panels were led by experts in the industry who taste-tested numerous Irish whiskeys in order to award gold, silver and bronze medals in 20 categories including a variety of blended, single malt and small batch categories. There were many GS1 Ireland members among the winners, including Irish Distillers, Teeling Whiskey Company, Pearse Lyons Distillery and Blackwater Distillery. Wicklow Wolf claims to be Ireland's first brewery powered by solar energy
Craft beer produver, Wicklow Wolf, has claimed to be the first brewery in Ireland powered by solar energy. The company has installed solar panels across the roof of its 17,000 square foot Newtownmountkennedy facility in order to produce 107,000kWh of electricity per year. The new panels will help Wicklow Wolf to cut their electricity usage by a third and save around 30 tonnes of carbon emissions a year. The initiative is part of a larger sustainability strategy involving planting 2,500 native trees, joining Repak and installing a state-of-the-art new water system. They also participate in beach cleans and have recently announced the set up of a new running club.

The Happy Pear set to launch in Northern Ireland
The Happy Pear, is to launch its plat-based food range in Northern Ireland for the first time as part of an exclusive partnership with Musgrave NI. In a deal estimated to be worth an annual £750,000, the products will be rolled out in Centra, SuperValu and Mace stores in Northern Ireland in the coming months. Founded in 2004 by twin brothers Steve and Dave Flynn, The Happy Pear began as a small fruit and veg shop in Greystones, County Wicklow and quickly expanding to include a café. The brothers have become well-known among followers of a plant-based lifestyle and have released a podcast, a range of cookbooks and a successful YouTube channel. The Happy Pear have enjoyed a successful working relationship with the Musgrave Group since they joined the SuperValu Food Academy Programme in 2013.
Powerscourt Distillery release special bottling with Wicklow Brewery
The Powerscourt Distillery has announced a special release with casks from fellow county craft brewers, The Wicklow Brewery. The special bottling of Fercullen Irish whiskey is the first of a Distillery Select series hand-chosen by the Powerscourt team, and is exclusively available online from their website and in-store at the Distillery shop. For this release, the distillery team took a 10-year-old single grain Irish whiskey and finished it for 18 months in two barrels which previously held 12.12.20 Imperial Stout from The Wicklow Brewery in Redcross. The final spirit comes in at 49% ABV and is limited to just 552 bottles. This limited edition is available on their online store or at the Distillery Shop, priced at €95.
