Blanco Niño transitions to full recyclable packaging

Premium tortilla chip company, Blanco Niño, is rolling out fully recyclable packaging across its full range. The Tipperary-based food producer is the first premium corn tortilla chip brand in the UK and Ireland to move to fully recyclable packaging. Traditional crisp packets present a challenge for waste management as it takes hundreds of years for them to decompose. Blanco Niño’s new packaging is made from polypropylene 5 which is widely recycled. The new design keeps the product fresher for longer and features a window so buyers can see the contents of the bag. The range includes Lightly Salted, Blue Corn (formerly called Ancient Grain) and Chilli & Lime flavoured chips. The Blanco Niño range is stocked in SuperValu, Dunnes Stores, Fallon & Byrne and many independent fine food stores across Ireland and the UK.

Abbott to add 1,000 jobs in €440m Irish investment

Abbott Laboratories is investing €440 million in Ireland with plans for a new manufacturing plant in Kilkenny and additional positions in Donegal. The company announced that it will be adding 1,000 jobs to its Irish workforce, making Ireland a leading producer of modern diabetes glucose monitoring devices. The new jobs will be in the areas of engineering, quality control, medical device manufacturing and other science-based areas. The company’s 'Freestyle Libre 3' glucose monitors allow diabetes patients to avoid finger-prick tests several times a day to check glucose levels. The device attaches to the back of the patient's arm and with a small sensor allows them to track their glucose levels continuously. The person's glucose levels can then be read on an app on their phone and alarms if glucose levels are too low or too high. Abbott already employs 5,000 people in Ireland.
