Welcome to GS1 Ireland members' news for week 25 2021. This week we have a beauty award winner and the first biodynamic whisky in the world. Read on for more.

Powerscourt Distillery set to reopen on 8th July

Powerscourt Distillery is set to provisionally re-open for guided tours on the 8th of July, in line with current COVID guidelines. Visitors to the facility can enjoy a fully immersive, grain to glass whiskey distillery tour and tasting, experiencing first-hand the sights, sounds and smells of Wicklow’s only fully operational Irish whiskey distillery. There is also the option to take part in a Wicklow food and whiskey pairing experience with local artisan foods and Fercullen whiskeys specially selected by the resident food historian. The chosen seasonal foods reflect the history and legacy of Wicklow and its local producers.

Ultimate Irish Whiskey Experience
A distillery and warehouse tour of Wicklow’s only fully operational whiskey distillery, concluding with a sampling of four Fercullen Irish whiskeys. This option is €25pp.

Wicklow Food & Whiskey Pairing Experience
This tour is €35pp, and includes the full tour and tasting with the addition of local artisan foods specifically chosen to pair with each of the Fercullen whiskeys.

Neurent Medical to compete in global medtech competition

The international MedTech Innovator competition has announced its selection of 50 leading medical device, diagnostic and digital health start-ups from nearly 1,100 applications. Neurent Medical was one of four Irish start-ups chosen to participate in the competition. The company is dedicated to developing highly innovative non-surgical interventions that treat chronic inflammatory sino-nasal diseases. The programme, which is taking place virtually, started on Tuesday 15th June, when the leading executives of the 50 chosen start-ups participated in the annual MedTech Innovator Summit. During this online event, the selected companies participated in virtual networking and interactive workshops. They will participate in a four-month programme that culminates in The MedTech Conference at the end of September, where all 50 companies will pitch to a panel. During the conference, five start-ups from the accelerator cohort will compete for the Execution Award, and another five companies will advance to compete in the grand final. The winner of the $350,000 grand prize and title of "2021 MedTech Innovator" will be determined by an audience vote. Additional awards will be presented, including incubator space at JLABS. The MedTech Innovator competition is supported by its partners, including Johnson & Johnson, Baxter and Olympus Medical Systems Group.

Primeline Group launches alcoholic beverages division

Primeline Group, a provider of logistics, sales and marketing services, has launched Bevella, a beverages distribution and brand-building business. The business will help new and existing brands, particularly Irish alcoholic beverages, to access the local market and develop on-trade and off-trade sales channels. Irish companies Connacht Whiskey Distillery, Blood Monkey Gin and the Muff Liquor Company are among the first key brands to be announced as part of expansion plans.

Accenture to create 500 jobs in Ireland over three years

Professional services company Accenture is set to create 500 jobs in Ireland over the next three years to support its work in the life sciences sector and expand its innovation capability. The company, which already employs more than 5,000 people here, said it would recruit for roles in technology, cloud, security, strategy, creative and design. Most of the new roles will be based in Cork, with a new regional hub to support the growth of Accenture’s existing capability at Enterprise System Partners (ESP). Accenture acquired ESP, a consulting and manufacturing services provider for the life sciences industry, in 2019.

CEO of CALT Dynamics shortlisted for ‘Founder of the Year’

Ross Lawless, co-founder and CEO of CALT Dynamics, was shortlisted for Founder of the Year in the HPSU Founder of the Year Awards 2021. Ross was one of 12 founders of high-potential start-ups to be nominated by their peers for the prestigious award from Enterprise Ireland. CALT Dynamics develops 3D printing technologies, helping manufacturers make better products with proven technologies. The company’s name is an acronym for computer-aided life technologies. Its services were in demand during the pandemic, as the sudden need for PPE meant 3D printers were working overtime. On 24 June, the Founder of the Year was announced at a virtual lunchtime event; Mervyn O'Callaghan, co-founder and CEO of CameraMatics, was named the Enterprise Ireland High-Potential Start-Up (HPSU) Founder of the Year for 2021, sponsored by Grant Thornton. Congratulations to those shortlisted as well as winner Mervyn O'Callaghan.

Waterford Distillery will release its first biodynamic whisky this summer

Waterford Distillery has announced it will release Luna, which it claims is the first whisky to be made from solely biodynamic barley, this summer. The whisky has been in development for several years and it will be the second instalment in Waterford Whisky’s Arcadian series, which investigates how historic farming and growing techniques impact the flavour of whisky. The first instalment, Organic: Gaia 1.1, was released in 2020 to acclaim from whiskey enthusiasts.

Irish brands Fulfil and Mude gain access to the Spar International network

Two of Ireland’s top food brands, Fulfil and Mude, have secured highly valuable commercial agreements with Spar International, as part of the group’s ‘Challenger Brand Programme’ which connects the global Spar network with innovative food brands which have strong growth potential. Through these commercial agreements, Fulfil, based in West Dublin, and Mude, based in County Kildare, will gain access to selected buying teams in 48 countries. Established in 2019, Spar International’s Brand Challenger Programme identifies innovative brands capable of disrupting the food and beverage industry. Fulfil and Mude are the first Irish brands to secure places in the programme and to receive international commercial agreements as a result, having been nominated by BWG Foods, owner of Spar Ireland.

MacuHealth receives the "Supplement Certified" seal of approval

MacuHealth, makers of supplements that support eye health, recently announced it has received the "Supplement Certified" seal of approval, the first nutrition supplement quality and stability standard certification program of its kind. Conducted by the Nutrition Research Centre Ireland (NRCI), Waterford Institute of Technology, Supplement Certified provides rigorous scientific analysis of products to ensure that the active ingredients listed on the label claim are present and remain stable throughout its shelf-life. In a test where 46 supplements were analyzed (products sold in Europe, Mexico, and the U.S.), 61% of them failed to contain the same amount of carotenoids, the active ingredient, as claimed on the labels.

My Apricot Kitchen is looking to raise €150k investment

My Apricot Kitchen, a company specialising in Indian-inspired vegetarian ready meals, is seeking to raise up to €150k by the end of this year in order to fund an expansion of its facility in Dublin and a move into the global export market. The company was founded four years ago by Indian couple Sayantani and Ahijit Chatterjee and sells its award-winning food products in SuperValu stores around the country.

Vodafone Ireland is now powered by electricity from 100% renewable sources

Vodafone Ireland has recently announced that its operations are now 100% powered by electricity from renewable sources. This includes the company’s mobile and fixed networks, data centres, retail operations and offices in the country. Vodafone Ireland also plans to offer eSIMs to Irish customers on 25 of its devices from 2 July. These are virtual SIM cards that provide the same service as their physical counterpart, but with data stored in a few lines of code on a dedicated chip in a phone rather than on a traditional SIM, cutting down on plastic pollution. These moves are all part of a sustainability strategy being implemented at the wider Vodafone Group.
