New GS1 Ireland CEO Takes Office

Dublin, Ireland - 30th March 2012

GS1 Ireland is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Mike Byrne as Chief Executive Officer with effect from 23rd March.

GS1 Ireland is part of GS1 (Global Standards1) the global supply chain standards agency. Established in 1974 to provide standards for barcode scanning at point of sale, GS1 is a neutral, not-for-profit agency with over 1.3 million members supported by 110 offices worldwide. It is dedicated to the design and implementation of global standards and solutions to improve the efficiency and visibility of supply and demand chains globally and across sectors. The GS1 system of standards is the most widely used supply chain standards system across the world and supports traceability solutions in key sectors such as food, consumer goods, healthcare and aerospace.

Mr Byrne joins GS1 Ireland from ComReg where he was Chairperson and Commissioner of Ireland’s Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority. He was also the elected Chair of the European Commission’s strategic advisory body on the use of radio spectrum for commercial and civil use, the Radio Spectrum Policy Group (RSPG). Prior to joining ComReg, Mr Byrne was a Director of Vision Consulting, the international management and technology consulting firm.

Mr. Byrne is a qualified Chartered Director from the UK’s Institute of Directors (IoD) and also holds a Master of Science Degree (Management Practice) from Trinity College, Dublin (TCD), and a Bachelor of Science Degree from University College, Galway (NUIG). He has also completed post-graduate executive education programmes at University College, Cork (UCC) and Stanford University, USA.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Byrne stated “This is an exciting time to be involved in the delivery of global supply chain standards. The need to improve the efficiency of supply and demand chains globally and across sectors has never been greater, particularly for businesses operating in Ireland. As CEO of GS1 Ireland, I am proud to present two national conferences on 26th and 27th April which will focus on new innovations in the use of GS1 Standards that deliver efficiency and excellence for the benefit of businesses and consumers.
