2021 End of Year Update for Members

A further year of challenges and opportunities

Mike Byrne CEO GS1 Ireland

Like the preceding year, 2021 continued with once-in-a-lifetime events of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Brexit, bringing both challenges and opportunities to many of GS1 Ireland’s members – both commercial businesses and public sector organisations, alike.

A note to members from Mike Byrne, Chief Executive GS1 Ireland

Each sector served by GS1 experienced significant change due to these challenges, and all aspects of our day-to-day lives were affected in 2021.  Perhaps the biggest impact was in how we as consumers behave, changing our purchasing patterns and channels, and fully embracing digital commerce.

At GS1 Ireland we welcome the fact that many of our members leveraged GS1 standards and solutions to respond to changes in buyer behaviour by utilising new, innovative solutions such as Barcode Manager, Verified by GS1 and GS1 Digital Link to highlight their product offerings. We look forward to supporting more members with their barcode needs to maximise efficiencies in their digital supply chains and to introducing new 2nd generation barcodes, such as GS1 Data Matrix, in the supply chain and at point-of-sale in 2022 and beyond.

Licence renewals

As we move towards the year end, we wish to check-in with each of our members to ask if your business circumstances have changed because of the pandemic or other trading complexities, arising from the impact of Brexit.  Should you need to discuss your account with us, we invite you to contact our Membership Services Team or email Karen Murphy, Head of Operations and Customer Service, at Karen.Murphy@gs1ie.org to discuss arrangements. Please note your GS1 licences automatically renew each year during the first week of January in accordance with licence terms and conditions.

Have your business details changed?

If you wish to make amendments to your account or the licences you hold, please contact us as soon as possible on 01 208 0660.  Our customer support team is available from 9am to 5pm each day to assist you with any queries regarding your licences, the application of our standards or any other advisory or training requirements that you may have.  You many also email us at accounts@gs1ie.org if your company information, and/or primary address or bank details have changed during the year, and we will update your details accordingly.

Prioritising activity in 2021 and planning for 2022 to 2024

Looking to 2022 and beyond, we have seen how COVID-19 has put our members’ supply chains under strain. However, the importance of traceability across supply chains remains paramount. Whether in the public or private sectors, traceability gives business owners the ability to follow products and goods as they move along the value chain and to glean exact information about the provenance of inputs, supplier sourcing practices, and conversion processes. With that data in hand, companies can make predictions, run scenarios, and dynamically optimise operations.

In 2021, the team at GS1 Ireland were honoured to play their part by directly supporting the Health Service Executive (HSE) and other stakeholders with traceability solutions in the national COVID-19 vaccination programme.  As COVID-19 vaccines became available, the HSE needed an efficient and effective way of receiving, administering, tracking, and reporting vaccinations across its more than 40 Centralised Vaccination Clinics (CVCs).

The HSE, in collaboration with GS1 Ireland, adopted a GS1 standards-based approach for the identification and tracking of vaccines to the point of vaccination.  Following an intensive design phase with the HSE, two software applications were developed: ScanVax to allow for receipt of vaccines at the CVC, and TrackVax to enable the CVC teams to identify, label, track, and report on the vaccines in their centres, allowing a much easier vaccine reconciliation process locally and nationally. To conclude, as we progress beyond the uncertainty caused by COVID-19 and Brexit, our promise to our members remains that we will continue to do everything possible to ensure you have access to the support you need in a radically changing business environment.  We are available to all members to meet your requirements for product identification, traceability, and labelling requirements.  Please contact us at info@gs1ie.org and an expert member of our Industry Engagement team will be delighted to assist.
