US fresh food associations recommend GS standards

9 major US food associations announced their commitment to using GS1 standards for fresh food supply chain in a new industry roadmap.
The group endorses GS1 standards such as GS1 DataBar for item level products crossing point-of-sale, using GTIN and recommending all cases be marked with a GS1-128 bar code or RFID tags. The document was introduced and now supported by the GS1 Fresh Foods Work Group and serves as a global “call to industry action” to move the fresh foods industry sectors forward to implement GS1 standards.
The associations are as follows:
  • The Food Marketing Institute
  • American Lamb Board
  • International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association
  • National Turkey Federation
  • National Cattlemen’s Beef Association on behalf of the Beef Board
  • National Chicken Council
  • National Fisheries Institute
  • National Pork Board
  • Produce Marketing Association
